Tunespotting - about us

Tunespotting has been built and run using custom-made technology by Red Balloon Technology Ltd. The site uses asp, javascript, ajax, dhtml and perl and runs on a combined Windows-Linux platform.

The search algorhythms behind Tunespotting have been developed over a number of years at Red Balloon, as has our unique notation software, which we believe to be the first attempt to provide a fully functioning desktop-style environment for generating music notation and midi files online. As well as our proprietary technology we have also used Sean Burke's Midi Perl and Han-Wen Nienhuys and Jan Nieuwenhuizen's lilipond software to provide some of the back-end functionality to generate the final music snippets. Thanks to Rainer Typke of the excellent Musipedia for his technical help with matters lilipond and linux.

Our goal at Tunespotting is to build a comprehensive database of melodies and make them easily searchable and browsable in a variety of ways. Crucial to our success is the community of volunteers who add new melodies to the site, and who add value by tagging tunes with appropriate keywords. Please join us today - your support is the lifeblood of the site.

It is our full intention to keep the site free and open to everyone to use without restriction. What money we recoup from the site comes from advertising and affiliate sales, both of which are, we believe, incorporated into the site in such a way that it is actually an improvement on our search service, rather than a distraction from it. If users can use our site to guide them towards a melody they want to buy, be it in CD, sheet music or mp3 form, we see that as mission accomplished.
